It is past time to acknowledge that I am never returning to this fandom, and it's time to set my translations free so other people can enjoy them.

Fan translations. If you want these, the only thing I need in return is an address to send them to. They are 8.5x11 photocopied sheets held together with plastic comb binding. I would prefer to give these away as a set instead of as individual volumes. This set includes (each bullet point is a separate volume):

List )

Official translations published by CMX. These I would like to sell. I have all fifteen volumes (numbered 1-15). They are in nearly new condition: I never read volume 15, and I only ever read volumes 1-14 once each; the spines aren't even cracked. I have not kept them in plastic, so they have been exposed to normal household dust, although I don't smoke, burn candles/incense, or have pets. According to listings on Amazon, they go for anywhere from one cent to $60, depending on which volume it is. The total of the lowest prices for each volume on Amazon (as of a few days ago when I did the math) is $204.62. Instead of the hassle of selling them one by one (and who knows if they would actually sell for the higher listed prices), I'd like to sell them all to a fangirl in a batch, and I'm definitely willing to take less than that to avoid the hassle of selling them one at a time. If you want them, make me an offer!

Malinda Lo's Huntress takes place in the same world as Ash (my review here), only several hundred years earlier.

Our main characters are Kaede and Taisin, students at The Academy, where girls go to learn to be sages. Taisin has never wanted anything but to be a sage. Kaede has never even managed the simplest blessing, but she doesn't want to go home to be married off for political advantage. The land is in a state of constant winter, and the king has been invited to visit the Fairy Queen. Instead, he sends his son, Con, along with Taisin, Kaede, and a small batch of guards, to accept her invitation.

Spoilers/Review )

My greatest wish is for Malinda Lo to be one of those writers who really learns to write by the third book. Ash and Huntress are both good, with moments that are exquisite, but I think Lo has the potential to be truly great.

If anyone wants to read Huntress, leave me a comment, and you can have my copy.

I read Morgan Howell's The Shadowed Path trilogy (A Woman Worth Ten Coppers, Candle in the Storm, and The Iron Palace) based primarily on the back of the book blurb on the first book:
Seer, healer, goddess, slave - she is all these things and more.

Yim is a young woman suddenly cast into slavery, a gifted seer with a shocking secret - and a great destiny. Honus is a Sarf, a warrior dedicated to the service of the compassionate goddess Karm. A Sarf's sole purpose is to serve a holy person called a Bearer. But Honus's Bearer has been killed by the minions of an evil god known only as the Devourer. Masterless and needing someone to bear his pack, Honus purchases Yim for the price of ten coppers - and their fates are forever entwined.
It sounded like it could be a good slave AU. It got a little iffy in the second book, but by then I was so involved in it that I couldn't stop. The third book is terrible.

Before I dive into more detail and spoilers, the one thing I wish I'd known before reading is that this trilogy takes place in the same world as Howell's previous books, the Queen of the Orcs trilogy. I like to read things in order, and if I'd known that, I would have read those books first. (I have no idea if they would have made me more interested in reading these or if it would have prevented it. I'm certainly not going to go back and read them now.)

The rest of this post involves spoilers. The books contain sexual violence, including rape, and this post involves discussion of those elements.

Spoilers )

I held onto the books as I read them (I had someone in mind to pass them on to who would have liked them if they had turned out to be the slave AU they might have been), so if, even after all of that, you're inclined to read them, let me know and you can have my copies. I'll hold onto them for a week or so before listing them on PaperBackSwap.

Request 1
A fannish friend of mine in the Washington, DC area is looking for a new roommate, and would prefer a fannish type to a Craigslist-found stranger. She has a cat. If you are or know someone who's interested, let me know and I'll get you contact information.

Request 2
A different fannish friend is looking for recs for fic where there is home remodeling and/or decorating. She will also take landscaping and/or gardening. She already has links to Home Improvement (J2), curving like the ocean toward you (H50, Steve/Danny), and Family Portrait and Blueprint (dueSouth, Fraser/Ray K). (I can't personally vouch for most of those - the only one I've read is "curving like the ocean toward you," which I very much enjoyed.) Any other ideas? Fandom is unimportant, and knowing her, she might read het as well as slash. (And threesomes, but it seems like with my friends, that probably doesn't need to be said.)

The Offer
I have a bunch of Dreamwidth invite codes. If you want one, let me know!
rsadelle: (Default)
I try to avoid spoilers for books I already know I want to read, and I knew I wanted to read Malinda Lo's Ash the first time I saw it on the shelf at Barnes & Noble. I did read the opening comments of at least two posts that said, "Everyone keeps saying they wish this was longer, and so do I." I'll say that too, and I have some ideas about how it could be longer.

But before I get to that, I will say that I loved this. It's essentially a Cinderella retelling, Spoilers )

I did buy the book (yay for multiple Barnes & Noble gift cards!), so if anyone wants to read it, let me know and you can have my copy.

I owe a debt of gratitude to [livejournal.com profile] anitabuchan for reviewing Justina Chin Headley's Girl Overboard on [livejournal.com profile] 50books_poc because I would never have picked it up otherwise. I have, in fact, read the inside flap of another of Justina Chin Headley's books in the library and decided not to read it. Considering how great this book was and how much the back of the book doesn't match the contents, I'll definitely be reading more of her work.

Girl Overboard centers around Syrah Cheng. Her dad is billionaire and business book author Ethan Cheng, and her mother is his socialite second wife. When the story opens, Syrah is recovering from a knee injury that's keeping her from her one true love: snowboarding.

Over the course of the book, Syrah works her way through her friendship with the best friend she used to snowboard with, her injury, making a new friend, her relationship to food and her family, and learning to use her rich girl resources (including the Cheng drive to succeed along with the Cheng money) to help others.

I just loved this book. I read it in two short sittings and didn't want it to end.

My biggest quibble with the back of the book is that it says, "...her own so-called boyfriend is only after her for her father's name." Spoilers )

Don't bother with the back of the book blurb and skip straight to the book itself.

If you're interested, I have a copy I'm giving away. Just let me know and you can have it! If it's not claimed by next Monday, it's going back up on PaperBackSwap.

How This Works: If you want something, or several somethings, leave a comment telling me what you want (titles as well as numbers will help me gather them up more easily) and email me your address. I'll cross things out as they get taken. I'll be sending things media mail or priority mail depending on how much you want and how many boxes I have in the house and/or can scrounge up. I'm still willing to pick up the postage, but since I'm unemployed, I won't turn you down if you want to contribute to the postage for the things you want.

As always, if you have any questions about anything, just ask.

Please feel free to point your friends this way if you think I have something they'll want.

Special Item of the Book Persuasion: Pink Box: Inside Japan's Sex Clubs by Joan Sinclair - signed by the author, also has the previous owner's name on the inside cover. (The story behind this is that when my grandparents downsized from their condo to an independent living facility, we went through the books they were getting rid of and picked out what we wanted. I took Pink Box with the idea that one of you might want it. My grandparents had it because they know the mother/grandmother/other relative of the author. When they first showed us that they had it, my step-grandmother had it hiding at the top of a bookshelf and was somewhat embarrassed to admit to owning it.)

[livejournal.com profile] norwich36 gave me a Dreamwidth invite code, so I set up an account. I have to admit that a small part of the reason was so that I could have my name (rsadelle, of course, although I can't imagine anyone else would want it). The larger issue, though, is that fic is starting to appear on Dreamwidth and Dreamwidth is hideously ugly. Sadly, persistent style=mine appears to be a paid user feature, and the least horrible of available styles is still pretty bad. (This appears to be a common thing with new fan/community run things - Archive of Our Own is also hideous.) Maybe one of these days, when more and more fic is there, I'll bother to put in the time to make it look better.

Anyway, bitching aside, the real reason for this post is that I apparently have two Dreamwidth invite codes. If you want one, leave a comment or email me. First come first served.

Some of you have worried about the state of my apartment. I swear it's not empty. If you want to know what's on my bookshelves, I did get almost everything put into LibraryThing. Books on my shelves and not in LibraryThing: junior high and high school yearbooks, the one unread book in my unread books space, my EQ Certification training binder, and the Eroica fan translations (which I've been thinking about because I never read them; if they ever release the whole series in official translations, I think I'll give away the fan ones).

Because there are so few books left on my shelves, I don't expect to do this again any time soon. My plan is to designate a small space in my closet for give-away stuff, and post appropriate things here when that space fills up.

Some things I was trying to sell are reappearing as free items because they didn't sell on Amazon.

How This Works: If you want something, or several somethings, leave a comment telling me what you want (titles as well as numbers will help me gather them up more easily) and email me your address. I'll cross things out as they get taken. I'll attempt to go to the post office once a week. I'll be sending things media mail or priority mail depending on how much you want and how many boxes I have in the house and/or can scrounge at work. If you want anything like insurance, delivery confirmation, etc., let me know that when you email me.

As always, if you have any questions about anything, just ask.

Please feel free to point your friends this way if you think I have something they'll want.

This letting go is really working for me.

Some things that I wanted to sell are now reappearing as free items. Notably, the comic books, which I decided were more trouble than they were worth to try and sell. Other things have been listed on Amazon, which I highly recommend as a way to sell your stuff.

Uh, yeah. I can't stop giving things away! Because I've already gotten rid of so much, these are the things I've been hanging onto because I loved them. (In answer to those of you who've asked: Yes, I still have stuff in my apartment.)

Stuff You Have To Pay For Fine Print: Prices include domestic shipping. If you're from out of the US and you want enough that it weighs a lot, we may have to negotiate an increased price. If you want more than one thing, we can negotiate about reducing price a little for combined shipping. I'll take PayPal if that's the only thing you can do; I prefer a money order, check (if I know you personally and therefore know I can trust you), or cash (only if you're local).

A Note About Pricing: If you're reading this, you probably either enjoy reading my LJ or you know someone who does, so I've attempted to underprice things a bit. Feel free to shop around and check it out; remember that my prices include shipping.

This is the second edition of stuff that could be yours to include both things for free and things that are not free. The not free and a few of the miscellaneous items from the previous round are still available, if anyone wants them.

This edition of stuff that could be yours includes both things for free and things that are not free. I'm basically on a never-ending round of spring cleaning. I find that once I've gone through a set of stuff once, it's easier to get rid of more stuff the next time around.
