This space (not) for rent: A poll.
May. 3rd, 2006 08:32 pmI'm feeling dumped on and/or unappreciated in pretty much every part of my life, and I've been thinking about what the heck I'm doing with this journal.
Please do not misinterpret this as "Tell me you love me or I'll never write again." Quite the contrary. I still wholeheartedly believe that people should write whatever they want whenever they want, and I've been spending most of my free time writing longhand. (I've been less sociable because of it. I don't want to do anything to interrupt the flow of it, and it's harder to go from typing, such as IM, to writing longhand than it is to go from typing to writing on the computer.) I am absolutely writing, and I still have things I want to say.
What I'm really questioning is the medium of LJ. I do have a perfectly good webpage, and I can write my own html. LJ's advantage is that you know (somewhat) that someone's reading and they can pretty easily talk to you about what you've written. The flip side of that is that it sets you up to start expecting people to talk about what you've written. No one's talking to me about what I've written, and with the way that makes me feel, I wonder if I'd be better going back to posting things to my webpage and not worrying or thinking about whether or not anyone will ever read or comment.
So this is your chance to tell me what you think. As usual with such polls, I make no promises to do what you suggest. Consider this an extremely non-binding straw poll.
Note 1: Please do not misinterpret this as "Tell me you love me or I'll never write again." Scroll back up to the top of the entry to read the long explanation about this.
Note 2: "Whatever you want to do" is not an option in the poll. I will, of course, do whatever I want to do in the end. The subject here is what you would want to see here if you were in charge.
Note 3: As always, anonymous commenting is on and IP logging is off, so if you want to say something about this or tell me to stop whining and don't feel comfortable putting your name to it, please feel free to do so anonymously.

Date: 2006-05-04 03:46 am (UTC)As far as personal entries go, I think it's whatever you feel comfortable with. I f-lock everything to avoid RL finding it, but I only lj-cut the TMI sexual/medical stuff.
And I'm here because I love you!

Date: 2006-05-05 04:47 am (UTC)Well, obviously I'm going to do whatever I feel comfortable with! This is an opinion poll, though, and you have to pick your second choice answer.
Aww. Thank you. I love you too!

Date: 2006-05-04 04:45 pm (UTC)Now I have one confession and one comment. The confession is that while I am familiar with "meme" as a technical term in Anthropology classes, the way I see it used online doesn't really seem to mesh with that so I'm not sure what you mean here exactly (on a totally side note: one of my professors argues against the meme suggesting instead that the "neme" is a better model of cultural transmission (and in class when a sentence spoken fast has both neme and meme in it you're in trouble)).
My comment is that while I don't always read your fiction posted here (usually based on time constraints and familiarity with the source material), I almost certainly read more of it than I would if you had it on your webpage (unless of course you posted links here, but then what's the difference). Now I generally don't post comments on the stuff I do read (largely because "cool, I like it" doesn't seem very helpful, and even less helpful is "I liked it, it was hot", you already know it was hot or you wouldn't have written it...). So although I'm guilty of not feeding back, and I'm not a thourogh reader, I do enjoy the occasional foray into your fic, which I probably wouldn't if they were on the webpage...
So monstrously long response over (for now, duh-duh-duuuuh)
P.S. My sisters went out and rented Wonderfalls on Sun. they didn't want to wait for netflix to send them the discs....

Date: 2006-05-05 04:51 am (UTC)Don't feel bad about not writing feedback. I have a whole set of issues about people who only write to get feedback. I am not that sort of person, and I dislike the way the LJ system is pushing me more into being that kind of person. If you want to just read and enjoy and never say anything about it, that is actually okay.
Hee! If they liked Wonderfalls, they should also add Dead Like Me to their queue.
