Fannish State of Me + WIP List

TAI announced today that they are no longer a band. I bring this up largely to disclaim: while I hadn't written any of this down yet, I've actually been writing this entry in my head for a week.

I think I'm kind of done with bandom. Bandom people, I feel sad about this too. I don't want to move on! I'm just not feeling the same way about it anymore. All is not lost, however; there are things I still want to finish. And that brings me to new fandoms. I'm afraid to start writing anything that could become a long story. I'm not ready for that kind of commitment. I'm also working on editing the Leighton/Vicky-T story, and I've reached the point where I never want to look at it again. I don't want that to happen with shiny new fandoms! I almost want a break between fandoms, but that's not the way my mind works.

Anyway, as I said, there are things I still want to finish. There are also things that are finished snippets that just need to be posted. Below the cut are a couple of lists of WIPs and snippets - bandom and otherwise - broken into categories. It's mostly for my own reference (and I'll probably keep a copy in my Google Docs to delete things from as I take care of them), but to make it more interesting, let's treat it like a WIP meme: if you ask about any of them, I will tell you something about it, or bump it up to the top of the posting list for things that are finished.

I don't want to say too much about Lesbian Vice Cops In Love because I'm writing it for bandgirlsbang, which is supposed to be somewhat mysterious. Posting begins in December, so you'll see the whole thing then. In the meantime, you can watch the video that started it all:



I think you've seen almost everything of the Rizzoli & Isles fic as I've thrown lines at meebs. It's one of those things where I'm hitting my fear of commitment. I would want it to mirror the pace of an episode, which means I have to think of a crime for them to solve while they banter about marriage.

I am of course going to have to ask about the "possibly questionable story" both because that is a horrible tease of a description and also because I think it would be an interesting dynamic.

And I have to ask about the girl!Gabe and Ke$ha rivalry because that is something I never considered and now I want it really really badly.

Every time I try to explain why it's possibly questionable, people look at me like I'm not making any sense. Basically, I'm worried about the gender politics of it, which were definitely questionable in the original tiny snippet I wrote, but less so now that I started over with a real story with the same premise:

Tom comes to his room anyway, after Danielle leaves. "He hit me," she says from the doorway.

Sean forces himself not to tense, not to do anything that could scare her. "I guessed."

Tom doesn't say anything for a while, and when she does, it's, "It took a while before I left," and, fuck, Sean is sorry he didn't take a swing at Mike last night.

I have similar qualms about the gender politics of girl!Gabe and Ke$ha's rivalry, but the setup of the idea was fun:

An interviewer asks Gabi, "You and Ke$ha have very similar styles. What makes you different?"

Gabi smirks and says, "Well, I don't use autotune."

For the second is there any way that Gabi and Ke$ha could, underneath it all, be friends? Or at least have some sort of mutual respect. Guys talk shit about each other all the time, it could just be the fun sort of rivalry. Even if only they know it.

The other one I can see what you mean, its just a difficult area to work with.

Gabi thinks it's all fun and good for both their careers. She doesn't realize Ke$ha's taking it seriously. The part where I think it gets really iffy is that in my original snippet, Gabi's having fun until Ke$ha sleeps with Pete - and takes pictures. It's funny, but I also don't like the way it sets up women as rivals over a man. (I couldn't decide if Gabi was mad because Pete's her friend or because she's in love with him.)

Yes, yes it is. I think making it a whole story with a lot more depth is helping.

It's always sad when it's time to move on from a certain fandom so have some internet *hugs*

I'm really excited by the not!fic Skippy & the Gabe/Victoria accidental marriage. I have a seriously unhealthy love for any sort of accidental relationship :)

The college AU actually started out as a story, but I'm never going to finish it, so I'm just going to not!fic the rest of it. (Problems I had: I didn't know enough poetry, and I started to care more about Bill and Christine than Mike and Kevin.)

"You're really going to let him do that?" Mike asks. "Thompson won't flip?"

"It's actual respected poetry," William says. "Not modern lyrics."

"'I want to feel you from the inside' is at least as respectable as anything you teach."

Kevin has no idea what they're talking about, but it has the feel of a familiar argument.

"Too vulgar," William says.

"How is it any different from 'batter my heart, three-person'd God'?"

William laughs. "That's religion, not love, and it's not on the syllabus for this class." To Kevin he says, "Mike has very definite ideas about poetry. Before he was the scourge of the economics department, he minored in English. We were both in Thompson's seminar a couple of years ago, and he fought with Thompson about that all semester."

Mike grins lazily at Kevin. "Not all love poetry has to be roses and moonlight."

I wrote the accidental marriage fic two years ago, and it's been waiting unedited since then. I recently figured out how to fix one of the fundamental flaws, so I have hope for it.

"Is this like an early midlife crisis?" Pete asks. "Leaving the blonde girlfriend for the brunette wife isn't the way you usually do that. Dude, I would have gone sports car shopping with you."

"I think," Victoria says, and she looks directly at Pete, "that you shouldn't talk to my husband like that." Fuck them if they think they're going to walk all over him and leave her out of it. She switches her gaze to Bob. "We're married. We're not hiding it. We'll discuss a different approach to publicity, but we'll do it as a band. Right now, though, we have a show in a couple of hours, and we both need naps."

Bob shakes his head, his lips pressed tightly together. "I'll talk with the rest of your band."

Pete doesn't leave with him. "Speaking as your friend, not your boss," he says to Gabe, "you could have told me you were sleeping together so I'd be a little less surprised."

Gabe stands up, letting go of Victoria's hand in the process. "We've only slept together once." He goes through the door, leaving Victoria to be the only witness to the surprise on Pete's face when he figures out what that means.

I wrote the college AU variation of that prompt for no_tags, but almost as soon as I started writing, I came up with a non-AU variation too. It needs a little editing and the ending needs fleshing out a little, but it's basically done now.

"It's nice out here," Alicia says. "Why didn't we buy a house with a pool?"

"We're from Jersey," Mikey says. "They're not standard issue for us."

"Don't look at me," Nate says when Alicia does just that. "I live in a condo complex with a pool."

Alicia keeps looking at him until he smiles sideways at her and says, "You can come use my pool anytime you want."

Alicia puts her arm around him. "You're the best boyfriend my husband could ever have."
