Today's music is a two-for-one. When I was a small child in the 80s, Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" was my favorite song.

(Damn you, imeem, for only embedding a clip! You can hear the whole thing with the video.)

Many years later, as an adult, a friend who didn't know about my previous affection for the song made me a mix CD that included Cassandra Wilson's cover.

Also, I've switched to imeem because I can just embed the music easily, and I'm creating a playlist of all of this. (I have no idea how well this playlist will come out since I don't have a plan or anything, but we'll see.)

Today's song is again one I heard just the day before writing this post. [livejournal.com profile] norwich36 and I went to see Slumdog Millionaire yesterday. I thought it was very well done, and I enjoyed it, although I will warn you that there are a few moments of violence I had to close my eyes through. The music for the movie was amazing, and it certainly deserves the Oscar nominations. I considered both "Paper Planes" and "Jai Ho" as today's song of the day, but in the end, had to go with the one that was my first impulse: "O... Saya."

Today's song is one I heard for the very first time yesterday: "You Are The Light (by which I travel into this and that)" by Jens Lekman. One of the fic soundtracks I downloaded was made by [livejournal.com profile] dark_reaction for [livejournal.com profile] hkath's "Yes Sir (I Don't Mean Maybe)" (soundtrack link). I liked the way it started out - it really had the feeling of the beginning of the fic, and made me want to go read it again - but I got tired of it by the middle or so. "You Are The Light," however, is awesome, and made me laugh. I love the contrast the lyrics and his deep voice make against the breezy big band tune.

I'm Jewish leaning towards Buddhist, but I have to admit a fondness for Christian music. Today's song is "I'm Going Home" by the Sacred Harp Singers at Liberty Church, which [livejournal.com profile] lakeeffectgirl offered up for download a couple of years ago. My computer just got almost all new innards, and in the act of transferring files and reinstalling iTunes, I rediscovered this song, and I love it.

[livejournal.com profile] dedalvs responded to my post about Proust Was a Neuroscientist with a list of ways to find new music. They're good ideas, but, as I told him, I don't care enough about music to put in the effort. (I think if I were interested enough, I could write a music version of my post about how visual art doesn't do it for me.) But his idea about asking friends is something I do have the effort for. (I've also downloaded a few fic soundtracks over the last few days. So far, I've only listened to the one that's the soundtrack to a Chris/Steve cowboy AU. It's pretty good, although there's one song that doesn't fit with the atmosphere of the others.)

Recs Request
What music would you suggest? Is there anything that you're loving right now that I would like? I have a $3 mp3/movie/TV show credit from Amazon that I'd love to use before it expires at the end of the month, so anything that you think I should buy from them (from a non-RIAA label) would be an extra bonus.

Project: 22 Days of Music
In return for any recs you may or may not make, I'll make some recs myself. Every day between now and Valentine's Day, I'll post about one song I like. Rules to keep me on track:
  • I will make sure you can listen to the song somehow (this may take the form of YouTube videos fairly frequently because almost everything is on YouTube and I'm probably too lazy to upload every song for you).
  • For those of you who fear 22 songs by Christian Kane and Steve Carlson (yes, [livejournal.com profile] fuseji, I am looking at you), I promise not to repeat artists.
  • Valentine's Day will be a love song. (I didn't have to tell you this, but two seemed like not enough rules.)
