I was writing feedback to Bliss' "Mostly Harmless" today, and I realized that part of why I'm such an advocate for onlist feedback is that when I write feedback, I don't really write it for the author of the story.

When I write serious feedback, more than just, "Oh, I liked it," I put all of my AP/IB literary analysis training to good use. I don't really say what I did or didn't like so much as I analyze the story. I point out how pieces of it work, or don't work, what they signal to the reader, and how they tie into an overall idea of the fic or the fandom. I don't really do it to help the author. I do it because that's how I know how to talk about literature, because it helps me get a better grip on the story, and because that's how I think when I seriously think about a story. I write fic for myself, and, apparently, I write feedback for myself as well.
