For those of you who don't know: I got completely burned out on travel the summer I spent wandering about Europe. Either I'm over it or this year's travel schedule will throw me back into a travel-resistant state.

You may wonder why I'm posting the whole schedule here. There are two reasons:
  1. Invitation. This is your chance to see me without actually having to come to Chico or clean your house so I can visit you. I've noted in here when I have obligations on these varying travel adventures, but other than that, I'm free to spend time with you if you want to join me wherever it is I'm going.
  2. Asking for advice. I need your help in planning the best travel adventure possible. I need advice about things to see in some places, where to stay in others, and whether I should even go to yet others.
March 24-29: Chicago
Our whole team is going to Family Support America's 11th Biennial International Conference, and I'll be co-presenting a session with my boss. The conference itself is Sunday through Wednesday, but as you can see from the dates, we're actually arriving on Friday. Molly and I are already trying to make plans, but if anyone else is going to be in the area and wants to hang out, let me know.

I'm also looking for things to do in Chicago. I know there are all kinds of museums and such, but I don't know which one(s) I should go see. If there's anything of fannish significance I should see/do in Chicago, I'd be up for that. I've also heard there's good shopping in Chicago. I'm taking suggestions. I'd love to find a good sci fi bookstore. One of the women in my belly dance class also suggested I go shopping for belly dance stuff, so if anyone knows of a good place for that, let me know. I'll have my own hotel room, so you're even welcome to stay with me.

May 25-30: Boston
We're going to Boston for my mom's cousin's daughter's bat mitzvah. (Not only is it fun to say "mom's cousin's daughter" but I don't know what exactly that makes us. I have no idea how you get to second, third, etc. and once removed cousins. I have enough family to track just with my first cousins.) The bat mitzvah is on Sunday (Yes, this is weird. No, we're not entirely sure why it's Sunday.) and we'll also have family stuff on Friday night, but other than that, I'm free for sightseeing and visiting. Again, I'll have my own hotel room, so you're even welcome to stay with me.

I know I'll want to go on some sort of DamonAffleck hometown tour, although I'm not entirely sure what that would consist of, but I don't know what else I should do there. Should I just grab a guidebook and go see all the important things, or is there any one thing I should definitely do/see?

July 8: Reno
My cousin is getting married in Reno on the evening of July 8. If anyone wants to hang out with me in Reno, let me know and I'll go for the whole weekend. Otherwise, my plan is to go up there on Saturday, go to the wedding, stay overnight, and go home on Sunday. My parents and some of my other cousins are going up there for a Bob Dylan concert in a couple of weeks, and they'll be giving us the status report on whether it's safe to stay with one of the cousins who lives there. She has seven dogs, which makes me disinclined to stay at her place. However, there's another cousin living there who might be putting people up. The third cousin who lives there (the one who's getting married doesn't) has a husband, two dogs, and two small children. I doubt they'll be hosting guests. The suggested hotels are all casinos. If you know of a non-casino hotel in Reno that you recommend, let me know.

Late Summer: Possible Congoing
I've been halfheartedly considering Writercon. On the plus side, it's a con for writers and a few Buffy writers I read are going. On the negative side, they seem to take themselves a bit too seriously. Their website makes it sound like this is a Serious event for Serious writers about the Serious business of writing. I'd only want to go if it's going to be fun and there's going to be time and space for frivolity.

The other con I've been sort of thinking about is Worldcon, which is going to be in Anaheim this year. I've never been to a general sort of sci fi con, so that would be a good thing. I have this thing where I tend not to like writers whose writing I like (this is a general trend, not an absolute), so the idea of actually hearing Connie Willis (one of my absolute all-time favorite authors) speak makes me a little uneasy. Worldcon would be especially fun if someone else, perhaps even someone who's already more or less in the area, wanted to go with me. ([livejournal.com profile] allegram, this hint is directed primarily although not exclusively at you.)

November 3-5: Possible Congoing
I'm thinking about going to BASCon this year. I haven't gone in the past because (a) I didn't know anybody and (b) the four to four and a half hour drive really doesn't sound like fun. However, I now know more people and Con and Lady J's Absence of Color panel was awesome at Escapade and Con said he's doing it again at BASCon, so I'm thinking maybe I will go. On the other hand, I heard that it's not as female character friendly as Escapade. And back on the first hand, I might be able to get cheap tickets and just fly instead of driving.

Other Travel 1: The Beach
I love going to the beach for just a couple of days in the summer. I'll probably just go for the weekend this year, and do what I did last year, which was stay close enough to walk to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The beach I like is just up the coast a ways. I could drive down on a Friday, go to the Aquarium on Saturday, and then go to the beach and drive home on Sunday.

Other Travel 2: SoCal
I was so excited just to hear about [livejournal.com profile] tesla321's adventures going to see Kane that I finally realized, duh! They're actually usually in my state. (That's California, not excitement, delusion, or confusion.) I'll be keeping an eye on their gigs page (Do they have a mailing list of some sort? I know I got an email about the Acoustic Live in London CD, but I didn't get anything about their shows in Nashville.) to see if they're going to play a weekend show in the LA area. I could fly down there, see them play, and then take the opportunity to visit [livejournal.com profile] allegram and [livejournal.com profile] dedalvs in La Jolla or OC or wherever they happen to be that weekend. (I had a bunch of fangirling about Kane in here, but it was off the topic, even though it seemed like a segue without any artificial preservatives. I've saved the fangirling and will try to incorporate it into a future entry.)

Other Travel 3: Work
I know we'll be in Sacramento for two days in the summer (Although if you're in the Sacramento area and want to hang out, that's close enough that we don't have to wait for specific travel opportunities.), and there may be other times I'll travel for work. I usually don't have to go anywhere, but occasionally we need the whole team.

First, [livejournal.com profile] starlet2367 and I are going to WriterCon, but I anticipate getting thrown out or at the very least, offending people because I won't be serious. When I take time off, dude, I'm off. In fact,
I doubt if I do anything that involves Discussing Writing. We're going there to hang out by the pool and have drinks with paper umbrellas.

Second, the KANE website has a a "KANETeamers" sign-up---they'll send you e-mails; which is how I knew about the gig, to start with.

Definitely. :) I've no ideas for a Damon/Affleck tour, but I know a great chocolate shop and a good gay cafe.

Still trying to figure out if I can get down to Chicago or not to visit you! I want to! but I don't think I asked off from Stein's in time. Are you doing conference stuff on Sunday, or would I be able to drive down and hang out then? Y!Maps says it would take me about two hours to get there.

I get off at six, which might not make for a bad drive down since I'll miss most of rush hour by the time I hit that stretch, but I might be able to get out of there a little bit earlier. I'll look into it. Either way, I'll probably drive down after and spend the night.

Not only is it fun to say "mom's cousin's daughter" but I don't know what exactly that makes us.

According to this entry on cousins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_cousin), she is your second cousin, and your mother's cousin is your cousin once removed. This was a timely issue for me, as I have been trying to figure out how to refer to *my* cousin's daughter, and your entry reminded me to look it up.

I have no comment on your travel plans. I'm here to explain about cousins. It goes like this: If your mom's cousin is her first cousin, then your mom's cousin's daughter is your second cousin.

Your mom's first cousin is your first cousin once removed. Likewise, your second cousin (mom's cousin's daughter) is your mom's first cousin once removed. As shown in the diagram below, any child of yours would be third cousins to any child of your second cousin's, while your child would be a second cousin once removed to your second cousin and a first cousin twice removed to your mom's first cousin.

Mom - 1st cousin
| |
You daughter = 2nd cousins
| |
child child = 3rd cousins

Basically parallel generations add a number (first, second, third), while cross generations are "removed" from the parallel. All clear now?

Ah, chiquita, I have no idea where I'll be when but I hope to see you. But when exactly/generally were you considering the SoCal trip? (actually I might be home for a coupla days in April, I don't know...)

Oh, and I hear we have beaches down here too so you could visit our seal and shark infested waters =)
