That's right. We went to see the killer aliens today, and boy should they have killed Tom Cruise. War of the Worlds is seriously lacking in quality. It's not Tom Cruise's best work, or Dakota Fanning's either. The long, drawn-out time in a basement with Tim Robbins drags on and doesn't quite fit the foreboding it starts with.

Really, the overall problem with the movie is this: Spielberg never figured out if this was an alien movie or if this was a movie about human reaction to horrible things. It doesn't really work either way.

The movie isn't completely without value. The alien foghorn noise is awesome, and a lot of the other alien bits are actually cool.

Lesson to be learned: If you're going to make a B movie, do it right. Hire unknown actors. Focus in on the aliens. Have the humans overplay it. Make it a B movie, and don't be ashamed of it.

I so agree with all of that. I just saw it and was far from impressed.

Well, it's Tom Cruise. At this point they could pit just about anyone and anything against him and I'd be rooting against Cruise.

I fell asleep during the basement with Tim Robbins part, and when I woke up, they were still in the basement.
