Today I'm thankful for the Habs video team and their dedication to things like this. The feelings I have about Danny being adorable with his nephew cannot be textually rendered.
KIDFIC. You may not know this, but Danny + babies is my fic Kryptonite. No matter how bad the writing is, if a story has Danny and babies, I will read it. (I may also be slightly obsessed with plot bunnies where he has a baby/acquires a baby/gets someone pregnant. There's no reason he has to stop at three kids.)
What if he and Sylvie always planned to have more kids after he retired? (I mean, probably they didn't, but I would go for that as the starting place for a story.)
Ugh, okay! FINE! (I really need an icon with an epic bitchface that says FINE!)
So like, in a year or two, Danny retires, and he ends up back in Philly because Caelen is going to college there and the other two are still in school there and really, he misses Philly. He didn't know he'd miss Philly as much as he did.
So he ends up back there, sort of wafting around because he's not doing anything, and even in the off seasons, there's always been so much to do, even if it was just all the shit he'd put off during the season.
So, he's bored, a lot, and he hangs out with Claude, a lot. And he goes to a lot of Flyer's things, even if he's still a bit bitter about the whole thing. Lavvy's gone, though, and even if it was Holmgren's fault, Lavvy would have been a constant reminder that he'd been written off there.
Claude eventually notices that Danny's moping isn't purely hockey related, isn't purely being bored, and he corners him--or, well, he brings it up one night while they're watching the late night news, because Danny crashes at Claude's or Claude crashes at Danny's a good portion of the time.
Danny is a bit hesitant to talk about it, at first, but finally-finally-it all tumbles out.
"We were going to have more kids," Danny tells him. "We planned it out, and three was enough with me on the road, but the plan had always been more kids when I was done with hockey and could be around."
Claude just sorta blinks at him, because no where on the list of possible issues he'd sort of compiled had 'wants more kids' been listed.
And of course Claude's response is "Well why don't you adopt, then?"
And Danny frowns, because he'd thought about it. "But they'd need a second parent."
And Claude rolls his eyes, because there are so many kids out there with one parent it's not even a reasonable excuse, but instead of telling Danny that, he shrugs. "Well, they'd have me."
Which is how Claude got roped into this, even though he didn't want kids (at the moment, at least). And he can't tell Danny no, because a) he's Danny and b) he sorta did volunteer himself.
And then Caelen comes home from college for the weekend, mostly to do laundry, and when Danny tells him, Caelen holds out his hand and his brothers both drop twenties into it.
"What's this?" Danny asks.
And Caelen rolls his eyes. "I bet them 20 bucks that you'd still have kids when you retired, except with Claude instead of Mom."
Claude stares, because he doesn't know how he got pulled into this bet, he'd just wandered into this whole thing recently, but Danny frowns. "When did you make this bet?"
Hartsy calls Claude on a day off 3 weeks into whatever this is.
"So," Hartsy starts, which is never a good sign. "Where are you?"
Claude reaches a hand out and steals a piece of Danny's toast. "Danny's, why?"
Hartsy laughs. "Just making sure the rumors were true."
"Rumors?" Claude asks through a bite of toast, because hearing him talk with his mouthful can't even compare for things Hartsy has put up with from Claude over the years.
Danny looks up from the paper and raises an eyebrow. Claude shakes his head.
"Someone talked to one of the boys and they said Caelen won the bet," Hartsy tells him. "A couple of guys own him money, I'm pretty sure."
"Wait, what?" Claude asks. "How many people are in on this bet?"
"Well, Richie called, he said he's gonna actually mail the kid a twenty, because sending it via paypal cheapens the moment."
Claude sighs and closes his eyes. "Fuck all of you." He says it again in french for effect.
Hartsy only laughs.

Claude lets Danny do what Danny needs to do. A small part of him hopes Danny will drop the whole thing when he realizes how ridiculous it all is, but when he mentions it to Izzy, she laughs. "Why's it ridiculous? You two basically raised his boys through the teenage years together. I mean, when he was in Montreal, when the boys needed a guy, who'd they call?"
"Me?" Claude asks.
"Yes, you. And not their step-dad. Ask them, I doubt they've called him more than a handful of times. If they needed something from a parent when Danny was gone, and Sylvie couldn't do it, they called you. Hell, Sylvie called you if she needed help."
Izzy's not wrong, is the thing. And it doesn't really surprise Claude to realize he's basically been a parent for years now, but it is a little shocking that no one had bothered to point it out before then.
