The original plot bunny for this was about Claude having a kid after Danny's retired, so there's no need for a nanny. Someone else is writing an amazing epic version of that story; this is just a tiny plot bunny variation on it.

Claude gets divorced after five years and four kids. He goes out with Scotty, the Schenns, and Jake and gets very, very drunk, and then, when he's recovered from the hangover, he goes over to Danny's for dinner. (Because whatever else happened, Danny eventually ended up back in Haddonfield.) Danny has always been his mentor, so of course he turns to Danny for advice on being a divorced dad.

Claude and Ryanne have basically the same custody arrangement Danny and Sylvie had, where Claude has the kids when he's in town and she has them when he's not. Claude finds taking care of four kids under the age of five by himself to be a nearly impossible task, and Danny makes it better by letting him bring the kids over to hang out, and sometimes they have sleepovers. Danny's kids are all out of the house, and he loves kids, so he's perfectly happy to have them around.

Eventually, Danny says, "We need beds for the kids. They can't keep sleeping on the floor all the time."

Claude is iffy about this, but Danny talks to his boys, who aren't there very often anyway, and they rearrange rooms so they have two rooms with beds and a crib, bookshelves, and toy chests for Claude's kids.

Pretty soon, they almost never stay at Claude's. When the baby is ready for a bed instead of a crib, Claude doesn't even buy a bed for his place, just the one for Danny's house.

Then Claude gets stuck somewhere overnight on a weather delay, so Ryanne has the kids for an extra day. But she calls Danny and says, "Can you come get the kids? They know they're supposed to be with you, and they don't like the change in schedule."

Danny drives over to her house and picks up the kids. Once he has everyone settled in at home, he texts Claude to say, I have the kids.

Claude calls him back immediately and asks, "What do you mean you have the kids?"

Danny says, "Ryanne called me to come get them."

And then Claude is like, "Ryanne called you?" and then he hangs up, probably to call Ryanne himself.

When Claude gets home, the three youngest kids are napping, and Danny's dozing on the couch while the oldest kid plays with Legos and one of the (very calm) dogs on the floor. Claude hugs the kid, and then sits down on the edge of the couch, waking Danny up.

"Hi," Danny says.

"Hi," Claude says. "Ryanne said the kids are supposed to be with us today."

"Yes."

"Since when is there an us?"

Danny reaches up and cups Claude's cheek. "Claude, there's always been an us."

Then Claude realizes he can't remember the last time the kids were at his place, and only vaguely remembers the last time he was there, and that they both live with Danny and that Danny is his kids' stepdad, and even his ex-wife knows it.

And then they live happily ever after.

I love this snippet so damn much. Claude can be a bit slow sometimes, can't he?
