Things I'm not reading.

1. The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. This has been on the bestseller lists forever. It's supposed to be the greatest book ever. It's terrible. The first forty pages are unbearably dull. Things pick up a bit after that, but it was too dumb for me to make it past page 88.

2. "Ars Moriendi" by [livejournal.com profile] wiseacress. I'm having some issues with Wiseacress' fic. I read "Modus Vivendi" on a site that didn't tell me how many parts there were, so I had no idea how much longer it was going to go on. I also wasn't sure I liked it. I'm still not sure I liked it. Then I saw somewhere that she'd written a sequel and it had in the summary or the notes something like, "people wanted a happier ending," which is one of my pet peeves. If your story is going somewhere, let it go there, even if it's not a happily ever after ending.

Interlude: Complaint. Why, oh why, do Buffy sites persist in using a white text on black background color scheme for fic? It makes it impossible to read without changing the settings for my browser, which makes every other site I visit while reading look strange. If you're not going to make it readable, at least include an alternate style sheet that I can choose from that nifty little View > Use Style menu item in Mozilla.

3. "Long Time Gone" by Yingdagger. I admit I read 22 parts of this before my complaining to Sky about it released its hold on me. I liked it that people other than Spike and Xander got to have sex, but there seemed to be long breaks in the action just so that Spike and Xander could have sex that didn't really further the plot and seemed out of place. Also, Yingdagger, the paragraph break is your friend.

Things I am reading.

1. Archangel Protocol, Fallen Host, and Messiah Node by Lyda Morehouse. Oh, yes. Cyberpunk, angels, and a future ruled by religion. Not to mention a bit of genderbending--on the part of angels, God, and AI--to make it even better. Apocalypse Array, the fourth book, comes out in June.

2. "No Pirate on Earth" by [livejournal.com profile] circe_tigana. This is a Pirates of the Caribbean/Buffy AU in which vampires are pirates and Buffy's the governor. I kind of liked it, but I found the ending to be extremely unsatisfying. It's still bothering me. I wanted more of an emotional reunion between Spike and Xander after all that buildup.

3. [livejournal.com profile] rubywisp's fic. She's just good. And she doesn't only write Spike/Xander, so if that's not your thing, you still might find something to read.

4. "On Location in Egypt" by [livejournal.com profile] dessert_first. Sky told me that [livejournal.com profile] eliade had recommended this. I was not up to concentrating on a story and bookmarked it to read the next day, at which point I regretted not reading it before. It's a Spike/Xander porn star AU!

Interlude: Speaking of Egypt. Support Wikipedia. This is a really cool project to develop an encyclopedia. Anyone can edit any page, which is pretty cool. I was reading an entry, noticed that something was spelled wrong, clicked the edit button, fixed it, and hit save. It took me back to the page where I could see that my changes had been made. Now how cool is that? For extra fun and learning, click the Random page link.

5. "Unbroken" by Stella. I think this a good fic, but I just can't get my head around Luna/anyone but Harry.

6. "On the Doorstep" by Meg Graham. Spike! Xander! A baby neither of them gave birth to! Don't believe the end of Part 14 where there's no link to the next part; Part 15 does exist. The ending's a bit abrupt, but it's worth reading.
