I don't understand the incestuous nature of the sci fi world. How do these people know each other, become involved? Do they meet in small, local writing groups and encourage each other until they've reached the point where they all have book deals with respectable publishing houses? Do they meet after they're famous, introduced by others in the business or serving on the same panel at a sci fi con? Do they help each other sell their work, recommend each other's writing to editors, broker the deal?

It usually takes me a while to read anything a friend has written. I have to work up to it. I don't like most fan fic authors, once I get to know them better, and I don't like most "professional" authors, either, once I get to know more about them. I'm always afraid that if I like the person, I won't like their writing when I want to because I like them.

This rambling brought to you by my second and, I think, last encounter with the written work of William Gibson.
