Movie I Love: King Arthur (2004)
Jun. 6th, 2011 08:55 pmI'm still trying to figure out if I can organize my thoughts enough to be able to write a long version of why I didn't like X-Men: First Class, but in the meantime, I thought I would rec you something I can gush over.
I don't actually like Arthurian legends. I know they're a classic example of the heroic journey/Jesus story, etcetera, but I don't like them. I'm pretty sure the only reason we went to see King Arthur was because Keira Knightley is in it. I'm so glad we did, though, because it's one of my favorite movies.

Three things I love about it:
- There's a scene where Arthur finds a quiet place in the stables and is praying out loud. Lancelot comes in, eavesdrops, and then says, "Why do you always talk to God and not to me?" This is one my absolute favorite movie lines. I think it says a lot about Arthur and about how Lancelot feels about him.
- The movie purports to be a historical account of the real Arthur. What I like best about that is the way it deals with the Lancelot/Guinevere relationship. They have no more interaction than a few glances and a conversation or two. I love that the movie is saying, "Look at how little there was that they built a legend on."
lakeeffectgirl and I saw Thor when I was visiting her, and the icebreaking in it is what prompted me to rewatch King Arthur because King Arthur has the absolute best icebreaking scene I have ever seen. It's worth watching just for that.
