If you're in bandom and you haven't already, go to Patrick's website and marvel at the terrible usability download both versions of "Spotlight."

The (oh nostalgia) version is good, but the (New Regrets) version made me want to learn jazz or modern or some other flowy, outward dance form. I can imagine the teenagers from the local dance studio flinging their bodies out joyfully on Laxson's stage to the (New Regrets) version.

I am apparently in the minority; the poll results are currently running about a thousand more votes for the (oh nostalgia) version, which is the one where his vocal stylings are more of a match to what he did with Fall Out Boy.

[Oh, and if you were wondering about my usability snark: the website has (New Regrets) on the left and (oh nostalgia) on the right, but (oh nostalgia) first and (New Regrets) second in the poll.]

Do I really have to become a fan on Facebook in order to download? If so, can you just email them to me?

Could you email them to me as well?

ETA: Oh, nvm, I listened to it on the youtubes. I'm going to sound horribly indecisive, but this was it in my head:

MARIE'S BRAIN: Ooooh hey, it be musics!
MARIE'S EARS: Ok listen to the first one.
MARIE'S BRAIN: I like!
MARIE'S EARS: Now the second!
MARIE'S BRAIN: I like!
MARIE'S EARS: Which do you prefer?
MARIE'S BRAIN: Play the first again? I overwrote the auditory memory with the second.
MARIE'S EARS: Are you serious? Okay, here it is.
MARIE'S BRAIN: ....okay now you have to play the second again, because I overwrote THAT one with the first and--
MARIE'S EARS: OH FOR...you know what? I'm not doing this anymore.

I would say I like New Regrets a bit more than the other.

ETA AGAIN: Sorry for the numerous ETA's, but I'm not particularly overwhelmed? I'm whelmed, for sure, but it maybe because I'm tired and in a bad mood right now. But for some reason I expect a version of this song to be on some indie movie soundtrack in the near future, at which point I'll falsely declaim that I loved it FROM THE FIRST and he's my bf or whatever.

The New Regrets version reminds me of some of the sounds off of Travie's Lazarus project, which is to say, very catchy, very smart, very now. it's got a fantastic sound, his voice sounds impeccable, seriously. There's a breakdown at the end that makes me wish the drums were crisper, if nothing else, but when the music comes back in fully, with the handclaps, that's a magic and awesome moment.

The Nostalgia version reminds me of some of the stuff The Cab's done, in a way, but it sounds so very much like Patrick. It reminds me, in a way, of Pavlove, which I love. Around 2:40ish, when that breakdown starts, that's my favorite part of that version. I love it, and I love the choral effect, but over-all, I think it's too close to FOB to really feel awesome.

I like it, don't get me wrong, but if he wants to distance himself from FOB, like I think Joe and Andy, and Pete have done, he should go with the New Regrets version, definitely. New Regrets sounds fresher, I think. But they're both very interesting.

I really, really loved Lazarus when I first heard it. It has a really fantastic sound and sensibility about it, and for the music scene being what it is at this time, it's a very smart record, you know? But it does have some of the same sensibility, in so far as the sounds can be very related to each other. (Which doesn't surprise me, honestly.)

And right! That's a very good thing to point out, definitely. It's gonna be interesting to see what Patrick puts out.

You know what, this just occurred to me a while ago, but as I was listening to both versions, I realized that in a few small ways, they remind me of Pavlove. That sort of same...feel, I suppose? But yeah. Maybe it's just me?

Oh maaann, if you had asked, I would have happily uploaded it for you! Pavlove's one of my favorites and I like the evolution, honestly!

The only thing I don't like about the New Regrets version is that the music drowns out Patrick's voice, though it didn't occur to me that I might unconsciously like the Oh Nostalgia version better because it is just a tinge more FOB sounding.
