My financial situation last winter was not very good, and I told people I couldn't afford Christmas presents. (This is why I did Daily Treats every day last December.) [livejournal.com profile] dedalvs had an interesting idea for a gift: allow him to choose one book for me to read. He chose Virginia Woolf's Orlando. Last month I thought, "It's been almost a year; I should really read this book now."

Dave, I'm sorry for slacking. I'm also sorry because I'm not going to finish the book. I've been trying to read it - a few pages here and there over the last three weeks - but I can't read it for more than about five minutes at a time and I'm not going to ever get to the end. I even tried skimming to see how that would work, and my eyes were still glazing over.

Woolf has this structure where she'll write a very long, somewhat predictable sentence that will take a turn for the amusing at the end: "Once look out of a window at bees among flowers, at a yawning dog, at the sun setting, once think 'how many more suns shall I see set,' etc., etc. (the thought is too well known to be worth writing out) and one drops the pen, takes one's cloak, strides out of the room, and catches one's foot on a painted chest as one does so." This is exactly the kind of thing I like in a blog post, but a whole book of it is too much for me, and I returned it to the library this morning.
