I think the character limit really changes the style (at least if you're like me and you like complex sentences, and if you don't break sentences across posts), which makes for an interesting writing experience.
I have a Twitter account, but have never posted anything to it, and haven't even looked at anyone I 'follow' for months. have no Facebook and no interest in it - LJ/DW keep me in touch with those in which I'm most interested, and I just can't see any benefit (for me)
Different people have different social networking needs! I love Twitter because I can just blab on about whatever without feeling like it needs to actually be substantive (which is how I treat LJ). My original intent in getting MySpace/Facebook accounts was to keep in touch with the cousins on one side of my family. Now, I'm Facebook friends with quite a collection of people, and I find it useful as a very low-key way to keep up with the people I want to keep up with.
It's definitely interesting. If you don't break sentences over tweets, it can be a challenge. On the other hand, sometimes a tiny Twitter box is less intimidating than a real document. And I feel less guilty writing into Twitter than into a new document when I have things I'm supposed to be working on. The biggest hassle is copying and pasting it into a real document later. I wrote most of "Three Days Home" on Twitter and then decided it was too slow when I got to the sex scene. Also, I have two Twitter accounts so I can do this kind of thing with one and follow/reply to celebrities (and celebrity friends and family) without worrying they might see it.
