Cast in Silence is the fourth book in the Elantra series. I've been reading them one by one as they come out, and I completely love them. This one was no exception.
I ended up staying up late one night to read part of this, and considering how committed I am to my usual sleep schedule, that says a lot. I didn't really read the author's note, other than part of it that says this book is about the past and living with the choices we made when we were younger, which is interesting because I think that's what the whole Elantra series is about.
This is a Luna book. Luna is an imprint of Harlequin, and I find it odd/interesting how many of the Luna books don't have much of a romance element, and even seem to be missing it. In the rest of this series, I've really been waiting for the Kaylin/Severn to kick in. But then there was something else about this book. One of the key characters is Morse, a woman who trained Kaylin to kill when she lived in the fief of Barren. I got the strongest femslashy vibe off of them. There's also this implication (I can't remember if Kaylin says it straight out or not) that when Kaylin left Nightshade for Barren, Morse replaced Severn in her life. (Granted, Kaylin was thirteen at the time, but that's still the vibe I got from it.)
For me, the most suspenseful part of the book was whether Kaylin or Tiamaris was going to end up as the fieflord of Barren. There were a lot of hints that it could be Kaylin, although there are also a lot of good reasons for it not to be.
I do have to make one complaint about the book design. The designer either chose a font with only one ligature (of the typographic variety) or chose to turn off all but the ff one. Neither option makes any sense, and it's particularly troublesome in a book with multiple fiefs and fieflords and a lot of discussion thereof.
