This month I read The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker, largely because Jezebel commenters mention it a lot. (It's entirely possible that it's just a couple of commenters mentioning it over and over again and I just haven't noticed.) It's very good. It's extremely well written, and he tells interesting stories. And while much of the book is directed at women, it's not done in a patronizing way at all. de Becker's main point about danger is that we already know everything we need to; we just have to be willing to listen to our own intuition. Definitely recommended.
