Never-Finished Fic: Girl!Nick
Dec. 26th, 2009 01:18 pmThis is something I wrote over Twitter one day and never came back to. I think it was going in a Joe/Nick direction.
Nicky's whole life is about music. It's all she's ever wanted, and being in a band with her brothers is the most awesome thing ever. It's just, you know, sometimes she'd like to have a moment to herself or talk to a boy she's not related to.
Zac Efron is totally hot. She knows he's too old for her, and she doesn't even really want anything like that from him. Just. It's nice, you know? To talk to this hot older guy and know he's noticing how pretty she is. It keeps being nice, right up until Zac looks past her and suddenly has to go talk to someone else.
Nicky doesn't even need to turn around to know Kevin and Joe are standing behind her, probably glad they've made Zac Efron run away. She glares at them, but Kevin slings an arm around her shoulders and Joe hands her a plate full of hors d'oeuvres. If Joe's bringing her food, it probably is time for her to eat something. She still shrugs off Kevin's arm.
"It's Zac Efron," she tells them grumpily. "It's not like he was going to try anything."
Joe and Kevin just pretend to look innocent. She knows they're pretending.
"I just thought you might like a snack," Joe says.
"And I just wanted to see my favorite sister." Kevin grins at her. Her big brothers are kind of adorable and hard to resist. She finds herself smiling without meaning to, and then handing her glass of juice to Joe to hold while she eats some kind of puff pastry.
Kevin and Joe close in on her a little bit, so she's left alone while she eats. It's only once she trades Joe the empty plate for her glass that Demi and Selena come to drag her away.
"Girl time!" Demi chirps.
"Was that Zac Efron?" Selena asks when they're sitting together on one of those couch-bench things that are a lot like restaurant booths.
"Yeah," Nicky sighs, "but then my brothers scared him away." Demi puts an arm around her and Selena takes her hand.
"We could totally sneak you away from them," Selena offers.
Nicky looks up, across the room, and Joe is looking back at her.
"No," she says. "It's okay. They're just, you know." She shrugs. If they don't already know, there isn't really a way to explain it to them.
She loves Demi and Selena, and they have a great time gossiping and giggling for a while. But she's been up since six, and she's out of juice, so she's completely relieved when Joe comes up to them.
"Hey, girls," he says. "I'm going to have to steal my sister away. It's getting close to her bedtime." Nicky swats at his arm, and Demi and Selena giggle.
Kevin meets them halfway to the door. He takes Nicky's arm with an exaggerated bow. Joe, never one to be outdone, takes her other arm.
She sits between them in the car, like always. She puts her head down on Joe's shoulder, kicks her shoes off, and tucks her feet up against Kevin.
She falls asleep somewhere between the party and home, and wakes up to Kevin setting her down on her own bed. Joe's behind him, her shoes and purse dangling from his fingers.
"You're wrinkling my dress," she says.
"I'm not taking it off you," Kevin says. "You want to get up and change?"
Nicky tugs at her blankets. "No." Kevin disentangles the comforter and pulls it over her. "Night, Nicky."
Joe puts her shoes down where she won't trip over them in the morning and her purse on the chair in the corner. He comes over and resettles the comforter over her, brushes her hair back, and kisses her forehead. "Night, Nicky."
Nicky wakes up in the morning remembering why it's a bad idea to sleep in her clothes and makeup. She feels gross, and there's lipstick on her pillow. There's also a glass of still cold orange juice on her nightstand, probably from Joe. She checks her levels and drinks her juice, and runs into Joe in the hallway. He laughs at her hair, and she makes a face back.
