X-Men Origins: Wolverine
May. 3rd, 2009 09:33 pmOverall: Meh. There was one part, though, that I would have rewound and watched at least once more if I'd been watching it in a rewindable context, and there was one other thing I really liked. Those two parts were amidst some stupidity and a lot of things I'd seen in the trailer.
The part I would have rewound and rewatched is the first part with Gambit. I need you to understand something here: Gambit is one of those fictional characters I fell in love with as a teenager and nothing will sway me from that love. I started reading X-Men comics because of the Gambit/Rogue storyline on the animated series. My other three favorite X-Men characters were Mystique, Emma Frost, and Jubilee. Of the five of them, the movies have ruined the storylines of three (Mystique, Emma, and Rogue; Jubilee might also be ruined, but she was such a small character in the movies that they could redeem it). But Gambit's has not. And this movie didn't do it either. I mean, obviously it's not exactly like the comics, but they didn't do anything that completely ruined it the way they did with the other three. You should probably also know that I love Taylor Kitsch, so I loved seeing him as Gambit. I also loved the way that the charge on the cards outlines the shapes. It makes no sense from a how things work perspective, but it was very pretty.
My brother and I talked about Gambit earlier this week, and he said, "They haven't put Gambit in a movie yet because he would be so cool no one would want to see a movie about Wolverine." I have this memory of X-Men fandom that a lot of fans looked down on Gambit, but I don't know why.
The other part I liked was Xavier showing up. First of all, Patrick Stewart is never a bad thing. Secondly, it was ridiculously cheesy, just like the comics.
A short list of things I didn't like (a long list would be too depressing):

A short list of things I didn't like (a long list would be too depressing):
- An adamantium bullet being the only thing that can deeply injure him.
- Scott having to yell while using his powers. (And speaking of Scott, where was Alex?)
- Making Sabretooth and Wolverine brothers: boo!
