The Books of 2008
Jan. 1st, 2009 11:55 amI've put up my list of books I read in 2008. Every year, I think I should start doing this list on the computer so I don't have to then spend time typing it up at the end of the year, but there's something so satisfying about writing each book down in my notebook. I did at least type it up into Excel this year so I could just mail merge into the html code.
I had a really hard time narrowing down the best books of the year. Instead of a top five in alphabetical order by author, this year, I have one that was the absolute best book of the year and the six other best books I read in alphabetical order by author.
The Best Book
The best book I read all year, as I've already mentioned was My Most Excellent Year: A Novel of Love, Mary Poppins & Fenway Park by Steve Kluger.
The Other Best Books of 2008

The Other Best Books of 2008
- Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway.
The day I broke up with my boyfriend Evan was the day he wrote the song.
- Belong to Me by Marisa De Los Santos.
My fall from suburban grace, or, more accurately, my failure to achieve the merest molehill of suburban grace from which to fall, began with a dinner party and a perfectly innocent, modestly clever, and only faintly quirky remark about Armand Assante.
- Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith by Jon Krakauer.
Almost everyone in Utah County has heard of the Lafferty boys.
- My Fair Captain by J.L. Langley.
A dried, crumpled leaf blew across the toe of his shiny black boot as he lifted his right foot.
- Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr.
"Four-ball, side pocket."
- Impossible by Nancy Werlin.
On the evening of Lucy Scarborough's seventh birthday, after the biggest party the neighborhood had seen since, well, Lucy's sixth birthday, Lucy got one last unexpected gift.

Date: 2009-01-02 03:54 am (UTC)I think the best book I read this year might have been Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I was up all night reading it a couple of weeks ago. You should look for it. (I was planning to eventually get around to recommending The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks, because the explicit psychological analysis I thought you might like, but apparently you read it before I did. :) Also, Ingrid Law's Savvy, which is narrated by the main character, has a charming voice.)
And *also* also, there is a sequel out to Wicked Lovely, called Ink Exchange. It's on my list, since I read Wicked Lovely a while ago.

Date: 2009-01-02 04:20 am (UTC)I'd never even heard of The Hunger Games before, but I just put in a request to get it from the library. The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks was wonderful. It made the first cut in my attempt to narrow down the best books of the year, but wasn't quite as good as a few other things I'd read. Savvy was one of the books standing up on display at the library not too long ago. It didn't sound that interesting, but if you're recommending it, I'll add it to my To Read - YA Amazon wish list.
Ooh! I'd forgotten there was a sequel! I've requested that from the library, too. I loved the voice in Wicked Lovely, the turning around of the usual way the chosen one stories go, and her relationship with Seth. Ooh! The third book comes out in April.
