I gave in to Torquere Books' deal and bought two books: Among the Living: A PsyCop Novel by Jordan Castillo Price (see? I said I was going to buy her book!) and Deviations: Submission by Chris Owen and Jodi Payne.
The good: I enjoyed both of them. The bad: I really want to buy the next book in each of the series. (I did make it all the way through four weeks of my exercise chart, albeit with what I consider a little bit of cheating due to the smoke, so I might talk myself into buying them as a reward for that. Anyone want to help me with the self-justification?)
Deviations: Submission
If you're a slash fan into BDSM at all, you'll love Deviations: Submission. It's hot and there's some roleplaying for extra hotness. The relationship building continues throughout the story, too, which is what really makes me want to read the next one. All too often, fan fic has some good sex, some good relationship building, and then the relationship settles out and there's sex just for the purpose of sex. I loved that Deviations: Submission didn't fall into that trap. (And I reread some of Chris Owens' fan fic [at least I assume it's hers; it's at the same domain as her Chris Owen page], and it's not as good as the book. I wonder if her SGA fic, probably written later than her Buffy fic, is better. I also wonder who Jodi Payne is, because I'd read some of her fic too.)
Among the Living: A PsyCop Novel
I liked Among the Living enough to want to read the next one, but it's not without its problems. First, as a supernatural cop novel, the mystery wraps up pretty suddenly. Secondly, I think Vic needs more character development. Even though the story is from his point of view, I know Jacob better than I know Vic. I also found some of Vic's thoughts/reactions out of place for a man in our society.
My third point is not a problem, so it gets its own paragraph. The first sex scene is interesting because I got the sense that she was trying to write more for gay men than for fellow slashers. The last sex scene is interesting because there was something in it that made me half-laughingly think, "Oh, slashers. We all have the same kinks."
