On the lookout.
Nov. 29th, 2004 09:38 pmIn case you didn't know this about me, I am a complete and total sucker for the AU. I have two new favorites: the cowboy AU and the hardboiled detective. Not together, you understand, but as two separate, enjoyable genres.
I wasn't convinced of the cowboy AU at first--I read a really horrible one to begin with--but then I read crazydiamondsue's "Rodeo," which is both completely devoid of plot and incredibly hot. If you happen to come across a grand list of cowboy AUs, I'd appreciate a heads-up.
The hardboiled detective AU fascination comes from a combination of Shadowcast's "A Diamond is Forever," Connie Willis' "Inside Job" (Asimov's Science Fiction, January 2005), and James Patrick Kelly's "The Trouble With Men" (Asimov's Science Fiction, June 2004). My interest in the hardboiled detective isn't limited only to slashy AUs. I'm looking for recommendations of any hardboiled detectives worth reading, although, of course, sci fi and slash are bonuses and strong, interesting female characters are a necessity.
There are other things I'd love to read. Surely, somewhere out there on the great world wide web, there must be an epic Spike/Xander BDSM love story where Xander's the top. And speaking of such things, I read a fic in which Xander offers Spike money to top him and Spike has such a good time he doesn't take the money, but now I can't remember either the title or the author. Anyone know of a Buffy fic finding list/LJ community? Or a Spike/Xander list worth joining? Or Spike/Xander people worth trying to make friends with? (Goal for the next couple of months: branch out and make new friends. I love Brad, but I need more than one meatspace friend in my town. I love all of you, but I'm no longer in denial about the fact that Buffy is my fandom for the moment, and I want someone to talk to about that.)
