Mmm, actually, my idea here is that Klaus does genuinely respect/care for Dani, and he chooses her. Every once in a while, I think I'd like to revisit this verse - one of the things I would have liked to do with it (if I were more motivated) is have Dorian find out that one of the rumors floating about is that Dani killed her first (abusive) husband, and then find/figure out that while Klaus would never ask her about it outright, it is part of what he likes about her. (I also have this ridiculously schmoopy scene in my head about pregnant Dani climbing into bed with Klaus because "I'm pregnant, and I want to sleep with my husband.")
