It starts before they really know there's anything to start. It starts at camp, both of them eighteen and wanting nothing but hockey. It starts with Jeff being the audience for Richie's dry sense of humor. It starts with Richie looking to Jeff for a reaction every time he cracks a joke or makes a really great play. It starts with Jeff pushing, just a little, to get Richie where he wants him, and it starts with Richie pushing back and then doing what Jeff wants.

And then it would be about how it looks like Richie's in charge from the outside, but he really isn't, and about how in Philly, Jeff is what makes it okay for Richie. He lets Richie push back against him without ever winning, and that makes it okay for Richie to deal with everything else.

And then something happens, maybe they figure out this is more than just how they act with each other, that they both want more than what they've had so far, and they both freak out, and they're not doing their thing. And when Richie doesn't have Jeff to push back at, he pushes back against everything else, the press attention, Prongs trying to be a leader, Lavvy's idea of what they should be.

And then Columbus is horrible, but it's even worse because Jeff knows it was his fault. If he could have just gotten it together and been what Richie needed, they wouldn't have gotten traded.

And then they're both in LA, and they finally get their shit together.
