So when I said I had one more AU plot bunny that had to wait until
ninja_orange needed an incentive, this is the plot bunny I meant.
Paul is a salesman of some sort that means he travels around the US and Canada meeting clients and going to tradeshows. He's good at it, because people like him, and he likes doing it, both because he's good at it and because it means he gets to party all over the place.
He meets Claude at a tradeshow. Well, technically it's in the hotel bar the night before the tradeshow opens, but it all amounts to the same thing. They have a good time hanging out, and they hook up - and they're still on good terms in the morning, which doesn't always happen for Paul. They hook up every night the whole length of the tradeshow, and then they go their separate ways.
But their separate ways aren't really that separate. They run into each other at another tradeshow, and this time they exchange numbers so they can keep in touch. This leads to months of texting back and forth and hooking up when they're in the same city. It's not like a relationship - Paul is still partying and hooking up everywhere he goes - but they're friends and the sex is great, so it's all good.
They hit another tradeshow, and it's been a while since they last saw each other, so Paul's looking forward to both the hanging out and the sex. Claude texts him his booth number, and Paul wanders through the booths still being set up until he finds Claude.
Claude's with another man, who he introduces as Danny. They chat for a bit, and it becomes crystal clear that Claude worships Danny and that Danny's just as fond of Claude. Paul can see his three days of sex disappearing right before his eyes.
He does accept an invitation to have dinner with them, and it's fun. Danny turns out to be nice, and funny in a way that's completely different from how Paul is. He also tells stories about his kids that make Paul chuckle and Claude look fond, because of course Claude knows Danny's kids.
They drink enough that Claude gets kind of touchy, and Paul's thinking maybe he'll get at least one round of sex out of the deal, but when they head upstairs, Claude goes with Danny to his room to talk about whatever it is they want to talk about before the tradeshow gets fully underway.
It's too late for Paul to go hook up with someone else, and he was really looking forward to sex with Claude anyway, so he just goes back to his room and jerks off. Jerking off is never bad, but it's not what he wanted.
The whole show is like that. He hangs out with Claude and Danny again, but he never manages to hook up with Claude and only barely manages some less than stellar sex with a woman he picks up in the hotel bar.
Paul doesn't text Claude as much after that.
He doesn't think Claude has really noticed until they run into each other at another tradeshow. They're in the lobby, and Claude hugs him quickly and then says he's off to meet with clients but that they'll catch up later.
They go for drinks, and Claude makes it not quite a question when he says that Paul hasn't been texting as much. Paul shrugs and says he didn't want to bother Claude, and Claude tells him he's stupid for that, and then they go out to dinner and Paul finally brings himself to ask about Danny.
Claude gets this completely happy look on his face and goes on about how great Danny is and what a mentor he's been and how awesome it was that Paul got to meet him because he doesn't do tradeshows much anymore and only happened to do that one because the woman who was supposed to come with Claude had to have an emergency appendectomy. It's a lot of information, and Paul decides that instead of trying to puzzle it out, he should just straight out ask since that's the kind of guy he is. So he asks Claude if he's banging Danny. Claude laughs at him for a really long time and then explains that Danny has this girlfriend who could do some really scary things to Claude if she thought he were making a move on Danny, and also Danny isn't really his type, and then he looks up from under his eyelashes and Paul can't pay the check fast enough.
They hook up, slamming into each other before the door to Paul's room even swings shut, and if it's not the best sex of Paul's life, it's definitely in the top five.
In the afterglow, Claude laughs at Paul for being jealous, and Paul insists he wasn't. Claude tells him about some tradeshow he's going to in a couple of weeks that Paul should come to if he's not already scheduled for it, and he also says he has vacation time he only ever uses to visit his family occasionally and they should go to Vegas or something.
Paul's been to Vegas with people he was sleeping with before, and it's always fun, and often full of regrettable decisions. At least Nevada doesn't have marriage equality so they can't accidentally get hitched. It's never happened to Paul, but he's heard stories.
Paul says that Claude's paying for them to get a ridiculously expensive suite, and Claude tries to come up with reasons why Paul should pay for it, and making Claude shut up takes them into another round of sex that leads to them falling asleep that eventually leads to Claude scrambling out of Paul's hotel room at six-thirty in the morning to go get ready to work the floor.
Paul's job rocks.
