Brad and Chris liked Big Fish. I thought it had a great ending, but it took way too long to get there. I do admit, however, that part of that may be due to my continuing severe dislike of Ewan McGregor. I was also quite disappointed in Billy Crudup. I thought he was terrible.

There are good things about the movie. The ending, as I already mentioned, was good. The whole thing is beautifully shot, but the funeral is exceptionally well done. The people attending the funeral are all in funeral black, and most of them have dark hair or hair that's gone gray or white. And then there's Jessica Lange with strawberry blonde hair and a red coat. It was a fantastic bit of contrast, and Jessica Lange was the best thing in the movie.

Also notable is Helena Bonham Carter's witch, who could have just as easily been played by Johnny Depp in drag, although I don't think he would have been able to pull off the role of Jenny.

It struck me on the way home that Big Fish is a more fantastical, male version of Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. They both have the same child trying to understand the parent theme, they both have the same storytelling structure of other people telling the story in flashback, and they're both set in the South.

Maybe it's less fangirl heresy than you got a share of dislike for Ewan equal to the entirety of all the fangirl love. All things being equal - some law of Ewan balance or something. *g*
