Passover ended at sundown tonight. At sundown, I went to Safeway. I wanted only a few things:
  • Milk for my cereal
  • Bread
  • Pasta
  • Chocolate cake
  • Sandwich for dinner

When I got to the deli counter, they informed me they were out of bread for the day.

Let me explain some things: This is Safeway. Where they make bread. I had just walked from the milk at the back of the store through the bakery in the middle of the store and up to the deli counter at the front of the store. There was plenty of bread in the bakery. Safeway bread. Sandwich-worthy bread. And yet this bread was not available for sandwiches made by the deli counter.

I understand that 8:15 on Sunday is an odd time for dinner, but that's why I was at Safeway and not attempting to find some other sandwich-serving establishment. Safeway was more likely to be open and serving sandwiches.

Safeway has also started selling milk in juice-like cartons, with plastic screw caps instead of cartons that open like cartons.

Safeway's redeeming features are its cheese, its willingness to sell you edible cake one piece at a time, and its extreme closeness to my house.

Raley's carries the juice, tortillas, and laundry detergent I like, their milk comes in actual milk cartons, and there is one on my way home from work.
