I don't know how you can pack as light as you do if you take hardbacks. I have to say, though, my own philosophy of travel reading is to take paperbacks that I can leave behind at my destination, and pick up something (or trade my mom/friend/etc.) for new stuff.
Well, I only have two books out from the library, and they're not that big in terms of space. (I mostly worry about the additional weight, even if it isn't that much.) I usually try to take things I can leave behind, but I only have one book to take and can only think of one book I for sure want to buy at Barnes & Noble, so I may not have enough books!
I haven't lost anything while traveling for something like ten years. (Let's hope this doesn't jinx me!)
