So now that I'm quitting my job I'm spending a lot of time reading gay fiction instead of writing it. (I read something the other day about defining what makes someone a writer. One person suggested the criteria of "someone who writes every day," while another countered with "someone who feels guilty for not writing." That second one is me.) Even with interlibrary loan (which I use a hell of a lot more now that I know I can do it online and don't have to actually go spend the time/energy to talk to a librarian and write out my name/address/phone/library card number for every book I want) supplementing my ebook habit, I'm running out of things to read. So rec me.

Criteria
I'm looking for novel-length slash, preferably first time and/or with a really good plot. I'm making no rules about fandom, so feel free to rec anything, even if you're sure I won't know who the characters are. This is, after all, why we have Google.

I recently did two rec sets that are all novel length fic (Supernatural and Supernatural RPS, though all the RPS is AU enough that it may as well just be original fiction): http://norwich36.livejournal.com/141022.html#cutid1 and

Lust over Pendle and its sequel, Dissipation and Despair (plus several shorter works) by A.J. Hall, all to be found here (http://ajhall.shoesforindustry.net/).

the 'verse is HP future-fic (written several years ago, and even then AU from the books) - the unlikely pairing is Draco/Neville, and she totally makes it work. in fact, in my head this is exactly who they grew up to be. canon characters are well-written and well-rounded, and she's got some of the best OCs to be found anywhere.

described as "in the vein of golden-age mysteries" they are both humorous and completely chilling. I highly recommend the whole series.

If by "the height thing" you mean the tendency of the fandom to take a three inch height difference and exaggerate it into gigantor Jared and teeny tiny Jensen--it does crop up enough that I think it is a kink for some people--but it's not everywhere. (And apparently Jensen calling Jared "sasquatch" is canon, inasmuch as RPS actually has canon).

I would say normally I hate the height thing, but apparently I've developed a little thing for Jared's ginormous hands, so I guess I can't throw stones.

Oh, yeah--since all four of the men in my immediate family are 6'6 or taller, I don't even think of 6'4 as particularly tall. And it does come up a fair bit in stories--I think there's a fairly substantial size kink in this fandom (I've even seen that used as a delicious tag).

Oh, well, I always love sardonic commentary--even on things I like. Sometimes I wish I was thicker skinned and could post real reviews of fanfic, but it's so non-fannishly acceptable in most of my fandoms that I feel brave even making public recs with caveats.

(Is the height thing in all of these stories? Because honestly I barely notice it these days. Though god knows there are enough other annoying tropes in J2 fandom I notice instead.)
