I'm not quite The Onion's Area Man, but I figured I should talk about this before you all start talking about fall TV and wondering why I have nothing to say about it. (This also seems like an opportune time to mention that if you don't like the turn my LJ has taken in recent times, please feel free to stop reading. I won't be offended if you unfriend me.)

I didn't watch any live TV all summer. The tape with the two things I recorded to watch later - the Dateline Wills and Harry interview and the concert for Diana - is still sitting, unwatched, on top of my VCR. I also switched my newspaper subscription from daily to weekend only (they didn't have a Sunday only option), which means I wasn't reading about TV either. (And I'm thinking about canceling even that. As much as I like the idea of sitting down with the Sunday paper, I'm not getting much out of it, and I can always read the Target ad online.) I decided that the only things I really cared about watching this fall are Prison Break and a few things on PBS (Inspector Lynley and possibly some assorted Masterpiece Theater things). So I cancelled my cable (I had the kind that's even less than basic cable, which really only gives you the local channels and CSPAN). I also bumped my Netflix down from three at-a-time to two at-a-time. When I have a TV show disc, I might watch during the week, but I won't finish it, and watching three things on a weekend isn't really what I wanted to be doing.

I taped The Inspector Lynley Mysteries last Sunday and Prison Break on Monday, and then watched them both on Tuesday. I almost couldn't handle the violence on Prison Break (which means I won't be going to see Eastern Promises with the boys), and I found I didn't care as much now that the actress who plays Sara is on maternity leave, and IMdB lists her as being on the show 2005-2007, which means she might not come back. I loved The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, though. (If anyone knows of any Lynley/Havers fic, point me that way.)

I also watched a bit of How I Met Your Mother on Monday, and I was interested in the plot, but not interested enough to keep watching when I had something better to do. Also, I'd forgotten how annoying commercial breaks are.

So there you have it. I am now one of those annoying people who don't watch TV. But don't worry about me; I'm finding plenty of things to fill up my time.
