Stories For Me

all that is good (10136 words) by sevenfoxes
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Bourne (Movies)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Jason Bourne/Nicky Parsons
Characters: Jason Bourne, Nicky Parsons
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, unprotected sex
Summary:

You think about Landy, how the hearings meant to expose corruption instead started to swallow her whole, destroying the last genuinely good person you knew at the CIA. You think about Vosen and Conklin and Abbot and all the fucking men who hid behind the flag and a thick line about patriotism while pursuing their own agenda, their own power and money. You think about your father dying alone, believing you were gone, that the last of his family was dead.

“There have to be consequences,” you tell him.

That is the difference between the two of you. Jason wants to be left alone.

You want vengeance.

What I liked: NICKY! I was really excited to get a story all about Nicky. This does a really good job of alternating past and present to flesh out the characters and their relationship. Plus reproductive choices.

Hi! I'm excited you're writing me a story! Thank you for taking on one of these requests.

First up, what I do and don't like in fic. In addition to the like/dislike blocks below, I have fic likes and dislikes tags on Tumblr and here on LJ. I'm cool with gen or pairing fic, sex or no sex. I've tried to give you a variety of ideas for each fandom if you want somewhere to start from, but please feel free to go somewhere else with your story if there's something else you want to write. Most of the suggestions below are pretty mild, but I am totally into kink fic if that's something you want to write.

Likes: Clothes sharing, d/s, women, relationships between equals, people being smart/competent, people acting like adults, soulbonding and other variations on meant to be, they have to get married, cuddling, happy endings, well-structured endings, kids and babies, dialogue, snappy dialogue, people who are practically married before the romance/sex, slowly developing relationships, relationship negotiations of all kinds, kink negotiation, unconventional parenting arrangements, judicious parceling out of backstory/exposition, a/b/o, d/s AUs, people making reproductive choices, werewolves, non-creepy possessiveness, poly/poly V/open/unconventional relationships, nonsexual intimacy (sex is also good), power dynamics, feminist themes, dialogue.

Dislikes: Embarrassment (especially teenage embarrassment), misogyny, historical AUs based on actual history (I do like fake historical AUs, like regency romances where same-sex marriage is just as respectable as opposite-sex marriage), randomly inconsistent pov, abrupt endings, endings that throw out the entire premise of the rest of the story, an overabundance of teenage angst, first person, trope inversions, infodumps, things that are going to make me feel anxious or full of dread while reading (I like things that are prickly and difficult, just not in a doom is coming or embarrassment sort of way).

Now on to specific fandoms:

AT&T Lily Commercials, Bourne (Damon movies), The Killing, Ned & Stacey, Push (2009) )

So far thirty doesn't feel all that different, although I do like the number thirty better than the number twenty-nine.

The biggest thing I'm doing to celebrate this year is taking charge of my birthday. I had one really good birthday a few years ago when [livejournal.com profile] allegram and [livejournal.com profile] dedalvs were up visiting, but my birthdays have been not the best for years and years. Not for any real tragedy of a reason; they've just been minorly annoying. I've said for a while that if I could get away with it, I would do away with my birthday celebration all together. See, I don't really want to spend the evening of my birthday spending a lot of time with a lot of people, especially when I've had the repeated experience that people don't want to do what I want to do. A quiet night at home where I can read, write, or watch a movie is my idea of a good time. (I'm not wholly antisocial, just a bit of an introvert.) Last year or the year before I tried doing lunch instead of dinner, but that didn't work out particularly well: one set of cousins was hungover and couldn't make it, and my brother goes to San Francisco to party for New Year's Eve and wasn't back yet. So this year we're doing dinner tomorrow night instead. (Although the cousins who are usually hungover are recovering from the flu and not yet ready to get off the couch and won't be there anyway. My mom says my brother initially said he would be there, but he also said that of her birthday which he then couldn't make, so we'll see.) That means I'm enjoying a quiet day at home today.

Specific things I've done/plan to do today:

Following on [livejournal.com profile] lakeeffectgirl's New Year's Eve plans, I watched The Bourne Supremacy earlier, and I think I'm going to watch The Bourne Ultimatum later. Jason/Nicky forever! I also bought the newest Michelle Sagara book last week, so I might go read for a while.

While watching the movie, I also wrote thank-you notes and organized some of the stuff that's been lying around on my dining room table for months. That might not seem like a fun birthday activity, but I like organizing and I like the idea of starting out a new year with at least some of that taken care of.

My mom's asked me if I had anything new to go on my wish list about ten times since I got a job. I keep telling her no. (As of about one-thirty yesterday, she said I was so far getting a cake. We'll see if she did something creative or just went for things off the list.) The reality is that my life is pretty pared down to essentials, and eating really good food actually is a treat for me, and something I'd rather have than anything else I could think of as vague wants. (The snack foods I put on my wish list are things I'm slightly less likely to buy for myself because they're either expensive [nuts] or impossible to find [Sunkist Fruit Gems], and gift certificates make me feel like I can splurge a tiny bit.) So now I'm going to talk about food.

I decided I wanted pizza for dinner on my birthday and that I could spend the money on the ingredients for it since I got gift certificates for Hanukkah and Christmas, and then I discovered that S&S no longer carries the vegan, gluten-free pizza crust I was buying. They do carry another kind, so I'll be trying that out for dinner with Passionate Mango coconut milk yogurt (something else I love but is hideously expensive) for dessert. Yum! Tomorrow night is Thai food with raw "cheese"cake for dessert.

I wasn't going to cook for lunch, but then the thing I really wanted was something that had to be cooked: rice, black beans, and sauteed bell pepper and onion. For the black beans, I've been heating them in a pan with a little bit of water, some garlic (I stopped cutting up my own and started just buying jars of chopped garlic), salt, and whatever spices seem good to me at the moment (today it was a little bit of cayenne; I think I liked it with red pepper flakes and a dash of sage better). For the bell pepper and onion, I just sauteed them on medium or so with some salt, pepper, and garlic. I also had some chips, some of which I ate with the main lunch stuff and some of which I ate with what I've been laughingly calling lazy salsa (cut up tomato). I managed to burn the rice on my first try. This is the third or fourth thing I've burned in that particular pan, so maybe I've just ruined it.

The bottom line of all of this is that I'm so far having a very nice, quiet birthday. Thank you to everyone who's been a part of it! I've gotten all kinds of lovely emails, tweets, Facebook comments, and even a v-gift. Some wonderful, anonymous person also gifted me with six months of paid time, which I'm excited about. I was thinking about letting my paid account lapse, but now I don't have to. Thank you so much, wonderful, anonymous person!

Happy Hanukkah! There's no particular reason that I'm posting this today, other than that I've been thinking about it.

This could probably be its own ficlet and not an unfinished-fic, but I don't think I'm going to do the cleaning up it might need.

Contains The Bourne Ultimatum spoilers.

It's December, and you know what that means: time to clean out all of my fic that will never be finished. Assuming I can count properly, I only have 7 things to post. We'll see if I can remember to spread them out evenly over the month.

Books
For those of you who may be interested in such things, you can see what I read this year. For the short version, here are the 5 best books/series I read this year, with first lines (I'm still skeptical about the value of first lines in determining quality, but some people like that sort of thing):
  • Fitcher's Brides by Gregory Frost.
    Crack! goes the whip
  • Oaths and Miracles by Nancy Kress.
Fourteen minutes into the midnight show at Caesar's Palace, the sixth showgirl descending the left side of the Staircase from Heaven tripped.
  • Archangel Protocol, Fallen Host, Messiah Node, and Apocalypse Array by Lyda Morehouse. (First lines in order of the series.)
My hairline itched where the dead receiver lay just under the skin.
    I never sleep.
Sometimes I wondered what God was thinking.
When the preacher asked if there were any objections, I half expected God Himself to strike me down.
  • The Drylands by Mary Rosenblum.
The crowd was bigger this afternoon.
  • Grasp the Stars by Jennifer Wingert.
The jangle and bash of alien music echoed over the cavernous dock, mingling with the squeal of heavy machinery.

Unfinished Fic
I keep meaning to do an unfinished fic list, and I keep not doing it. So here are some details about a couple of things I've been working on.

Montana Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Xander. I've been totally reluctant to talk about this for fear of jinxing it, but I'm half-stuck now and I don't know what's going to happen after the next two scenes, so here I am talking about it. It may or may not eventually be slash. I have no idea.
Spike shrugged. "Been seeing Red. Professional-like."

Xander's shot went wild. Vampires in therapy. Would wonders never cease?

"She says it's an inappropriate coping mechanism. Three in the corner." Spike, of course, had no problem making his shot while carrying on a conversation. "Seven in the side."

They played in silence for a while until Spike started fidgeting again. When Xander glared at him across the table, he stopped and looked almost guilty.

"Never realized how much time I spent smoking."

Xander nodded. "Did she make you make a list?"

Spike's eyebrows almost jumped off his face. "Of all the ways it controlled me? Yeah. One in the corner." He lined up his shot. "She got you in therapy too?"

"Not really. I let her practice some things on me. She got me to go to Al-Anon." Xander considered his beer and then set it down again.

"Yeah? That help?"

"Sometimes. Sometimes I've just helped save the world, so what does it matter that my parents are alcoholics?"
Lovers Will Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Spike/Xander. In which Angel harasses Spike, and Spike and Xander's boundaries wear down.
"Ta-da!" he says, and he even does the arm waving thing.

Spike eyes him suspiciously. "Joining the mobile age are you?"

"Nope," Xander says. "We are." He doesn't wait for Spike's reaction but turns immediately to flash a smile at the sales guy.

"Hi," he says. "We need two phones and some sort of plan."

"You can't afford that," Spike says, but Xander can see some of the hope and relief dawning in his eyes.

"No, I can't," Xander says cheerfully, "but we can. I know Willy pays you well enough."

Spike's positively gleeful by the time they get all the details worked out and the contract signed. He immediately learns how to program in phone numbers and puts Angel's in under "Sodding Wanker."
Love Me Like A Man Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Spike/Xander. Anya gets her powers back, promises Xander someone to take care of, and turns Spike into a mortal girl. Later, Spike gets pregnant.
He tore the condom wrapper, pinched the tip, and slid it down his banana.

"Your turn," he said, pushing a condom at each of them.

Spike got it on the first try--"Seen a lot of porn, haven't I?"--but he had to make adjustments to Dawn's technique. And the less said about that the better. This was embarrassing enough as it was.

"If you want to," he said, "you can learn--" He had to stop and catch his breath. Spike's condom-filled mouth was almost all the way down over his banana. "To do that."

Spike backed off of the banana, leaving the condom in place. "Lot of porn," he explained.
900 Miles to Stockholm Bourne, Jason/Nicky. I promise I haven't forgotten about this. I actually know where it's going, I just have to get my act together and finish it.
She doesn't know what he's doing, and that makes this the most frightening conversation she's ever had. Something must show, because Jason takes her piece of pie and Bob Hance leaves the counter to amble over to their table.

"Afternoon, Nicky." He's still casually sipping his coffee, but his other hand's resting on the butt of his gun.

"Sheriff."

"This fellow bothering you?"

She can't bring herself to smile, but she shakes her head. "No," she says. "It's fine."

She can tell he doesn't believe her.

"Well now, you decide you don't want to talk to him anymore, you let me know." He nods briefly at her and goes back to the counter.

"Good to see you're making friends." Jason's almost amused by the whole thing, and she's relieved he's not going to try to kill the sheriff. Sheriff Hance is a good guy, probably thinks Jason's an abusive ex-boyfriend and just wants to make sure she stays safe. If only he knew.

Crazy bunny of the day: Bourne/O-12. Maybe Nicky/Linus.

Sky says, "you're supposed to put a line of every fic or NaNo or whatever creative thingy you're working on." I'm not a NaNo person, but I have been writing stuff, and this is easier than the unfinished fic list I keep meaning to write. So here's what I've been working on since the beginning of August.

Montana
Xander tried to write back, but he was in Montana, and there was only so much to say about livestock.

Lovers Will
It's almost funny--Spike acting like a stubborn fourteen-year-old--except that Xander knows just how much Angel's constant calls are wearing him out.

buffysx7.txt
"I know you watchers don't have many people skills," Spike said, "but I'd think you'd at least have enough sense not to yell at an abused child."

900 Miles to Stockholm
After a couple of months of the gossip and work and visits to the beauty parlor that make up life in a small town, she stops jumping at every man dressed in black.

buffywsx1.txt
Her mouth makes a little "o" of surprise, and she steps out onto the porch to wrap Xander up in the strength of her love.

Love Me Like A Man
Spike, of course, was no less capable of asking tough and embarrassing questions as a human woman than he had been as a male vampire.

There's something about Avril Lavigne's voice when she sings, "Take off all your preppy clothes," that gets to me every time. Am I the only one who thinks of her as April the Vine rather than Avril Lavigne? Why on Earth would anyone compare her to Alanis Morissette?

In rereading, I'm struck by the similarity between Kassandra's "Out of the Dark" and the early parts of Diana Williams' "Chains of Desire". Was there a discussion on a list that spawned both of them? Were they written completely independently or was there some sort of contact between the authors?

My love of Eroica has been revived, as has my disgust for the fanon depiction of Dorian as an untainted innocent.

I've been trying to read The Bourne Identity since Saturday. It seems to bear little to no relation to the movie, and I can't seem to read more than a chapter or so before falling asleep.

I got a job before breakfast.
